"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of celebrated fans have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly feature them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to make music."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent confidence called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

However the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
