Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators

The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Context for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Offseason Issues and Media Attention

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its modern-era championship drought.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
