Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
